The Orchid Recovery Center is a woman-centered drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility designed specifically to treat the needs of women who are ready to face their addiction issues. The facility provides a variety of therapies, groups, and holistic treatments so that every woman who comes to stay at Orchid will have a completely unique and individualized drug and alcohol addiction rehabilitation program.

In 2008, the U.S. National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that seven percent of women age 12 and older had a drug dependence and addiction; with up to 12 percent dealing with alcohol abuse. It has also been found that women face tougher challenges when dealing with addictions when compared to men. They tend to progress much more quickly from using drugs and alcohol to dependence and find it more challenging to quit. Women are also more susceptible to relapse.

“At Orchid, women are the center of their treatment plan and customization is important as no two addictions are the same,” says Peter A. Harrigan, CEO of the Orchid Recovery Center. “In order to really address an addiction, treatment must be customized based on each woman’s experiences and personal preferences. This customization begins with the very first appointment at Orchid where women are asked to describe their addictions, their previous experiences with rehab facilities and their family histories of addiction.”

Women are also provided physical and mental health tests to ensure that no hidden problems remain. Many women deal with untreated trauma such as physical and sexual abuse and have turned to drugs and alcohol as a ways to numb the psychological pain caused by the abuse. Orchid provides treatment to address this underlying trauma.

Some women suffer from poor self-concept and post-traumatic stress as well as other mental health conditions, which are major underlying causes for self-abusive behaviors. Drugs and alcohol allow women to forget their troubles, at least for a time, but the issues are always lying beneath the surface waiting to break free once more. Issues of mental health, pain and loss are given an intense amount of attention at Orchid. These issues are given far greater dedication and attention than commonly found in other programs. With up to 36 hours of therapy a week and plenty of certified therapists on staff, Orchid offers each woman an unusual combination of communal strength and individual care.

“By examining the addiction issue from all angles and attempting to determine how it came to be and what might cause a relapse, therapists hope to provide real help to women who so desperately need it,” adds Harrigan. “The holistic approach to drug and alcohol rehabilitation at Orchid means that every therapeutic program offered speaks to multiple facets of addiction and dual diagnosis disorders.”

In addition, Orchid offers a methadone maintenance treatment program, which offers the use of methadone as a treatment for someone who is addicted to opioids, such as heroin. Medications like methadone can block the physical symptoms caused by heroin withdrawal and decrease the cravings for drugs that women tend to feel. Since women feel better, both physically and emotionally, they may be more likely to stay involved in their addiction treatment programs. Instead of dropping out early in order to return to drug use, they may be able to maintain their focus and stay enrolled in care.
