The Orchid Recovery Center is a woman-centered drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility designed specifically to treat the needs of women who are ready to face their addiction issues. The facility provides a variety of therapies, groups, and holistic treatments covering a range of addiction issues including polysubstance abuse and addiction.

Polysubstance abuse is defined as the consumption of more than one drug (usually three not including caffeine or nicotine) over a defined period, simultaneously or at different times. Often the person does not have a preference to any one specific substance. While typically viewed as multiple illicit drug use, the term can also include alcohol abuse as well as legal and prescription medication used for nonmedical purposes.

A recent study by the National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions, found that approximately 215 out of a total of 43,093 individuals surveyed in the United States (0.5 percent) met the requirements for polysubstance abuse and dependence. Other studies have shown that polysubstance dependence is on the rise. In addition, research has shown that women are more likely to have polysubstance abuse issues when compared to men, often more frequently abusing legal drugs such as tranquilizers, sedatives, and stimulants.

Polysubstance abuse is often diagnosed with teens and those dealing with mental illness or other medical conditions. Women can develop polysubstance addiction as a means of coping with medical or mental health issues, and can be a form of self-medication that quickly spirals into an even worse physical and psychological condition.

Polysubstance addiction is complicated but it is not untreatable,” says Peter A. Harrigan, CEO of the Orchid Recovery Center. “The use of and addiction to multiple substances can bring challenges during the initial assessment as it is not always immediately clear the biochemical and psychological triggers affecting a client. However, as with any course of addiction treatment, it is important to identify the root cause of the polysubstance abuse, and only then can we identify and address the issues and causes of the addiction.”

Through treatment programs specifically designed for women, Orchid provides the opportunity to break the cycle of addiction to enjoy healthy, contented, serene and productive lives. Orchid’s treatment programs help guide women through a journey of growth and healing, and treatment is conducted in an environment of trust where a woman’s voice is heard and respected. This provides a sense of safety and security that is essential for a woman to take the initial steps necessary in dealing with untreated trauma and addiction. Conscious eating, regular exercise and participation in spiritual work such as yoga therapy, meditation and Twelve Step meetings are all parts of the proprietary Orchid Model.

“Orchid’s treatment programs are tailor made to address issues that are central in women’s lives,” adds Harrigan. “The support women receive both from other women and the female staff is at the very core of our treatment programs."

Orchid’s women-centered approach allows clients to explore personal histories, uncover deep-rooted beliefs, and resolve lifelong complications in a safe and nurturing place. This individual attention becomes especially powerful in the context of the other holistic treatment and recovery programs available at Orchid, especially necessary when treating women with polysubstance abuse and addiction.
