"The California Product Stewardship Council applauds today’s 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling requiring drug manufacturers to share in the cost of drug disposal. This is a victory, especially for Alameda County, but also for every local government in the nation that wants to reduce public costs and make proper management of medicines, or any product, more convenient for the public.
We have worked closely with Alameda County over the last three years to make collection of medications safe and convenient for all Alameda County residents by mirroring the producer operated and funded take-back program operating in Canada. Without voluntary support, Alameda adopted an ordinance in July 2012 mirroring rules in Canada that are performance based.
This ordinance provides for the safe and convenient disposal of unused and expired medicines, protecting families, pets and the environment. This is a great day for the County of Alameda and the country and opens the doors for other jurisdictions to follow suit.”
