In ancient times, patients travelled far over rough conditions to reach a natural hot springs spa, where water would bubble up into soothing baths, heated by the earth’s temperature. Today, it’s easier than ever to have the therapeutic and healing power of hydrotherapy at home. For hundreds of years, the healing power of water has been espoused by medical professionals; water treatments and therapies have helped people feel better at a very low cost!

The Roman spas were famous for curing disease, and the English, Europeans, and American Indians all took advantage of water’s ability to both sooth and heal.  In ancient times, patients travelled far over rough conditions to reach a natural hot springs spa, where water would bubble up into soothing baths, heated by the earth’s temperature.  Today, it’s easier than ever to have the therapeutic and healing power of hydrotherapy at home.

For sufferers of back and joint stiffness or arthritis, the Arthritis Foundation has recommended spending time in a hot tub.  The soothing water both eases the tension, which releases pain, but also adds mobility to the joints.  Daily stretching exercises which are designed to help arthritis patients regain strength and reduce their suffering, when done in a hot tub, may offer enhanced benefits and those who perform their gentle daily stretches in the pool or hot tub are mitigating risk.  It’s less likely to fall or injure oneself when carefully stretching in a comfortable and safe at home pool.

For patients who would love to exercise, even just a little, but have difficulty working against gravity’s pull, the buoyancy that an in home spa or pool offers will benefit them immediately.  Being able to carefully and safely enjoy stretching and exercise in a warm, soothing, and relaxing hot tub is not only a wonderful feeling, but can actually have great health benefits that will last a lifetime!

The New England Journal of Medicine has reported that the use of a hot tub or spa in the physical therapy treatment of Type 2 Diabetes patients has marked benefits.  For those patients who used a hot tub for thirty minutes a day, six days a week, there was a significant increase in feelings of wellbeing.  After just ten days of this treatment therapy, some patients were able to reduce their intake of insulin and were showing weight loss.  Improved sleep and reduced blood glucose were other side effects of enjoying thirty minutes a day in a hot tub!

The increased circulation that results from the warm stimulation of a spa or hot tub is a benefit to most people who enjoy these therapeutically, and now they are affordable for everyone’s at home use and enjoyment.  There are a wide variety of hot tubs and spas that are available, and both new and used spas and hot tubs are within reach of most everyone’s budget.  The benefits of using water therapy to treat medical issues faced by most Americans as they age cannot be overstated.  The warmth and comfort of an in home hot tub or spa is just what the doctor ordered to revive feelings of health and wellbeing!
