Closing out the day... Stocks managed to hold modest gains this afternoon after oscillating between gains and losses for much of the session. Investors welcomed improved reports on hiring and the services sector, but concerns about growth in Europe and Asia kept advances in check. The modest gains came after payroll processor ADP said the nation gained 162,000 private sector jobs in September. The report is considered a prelude to the government's closely watched monthly jobs data, which is due out this Friday.
