The FBI has begun a criminal investigation of allegations by Palo Alto computer giant Hewlett-Packard that it was deceived by accounting trickery into paying too much for British software maker Autonomy. It paid $11 billion for the firm, but on Tuesday announced an $8.8 billion write-down, $5 billion of which it attributed to “serious accounting improprieties” by Autonomy employees before the deal.
