Amazon and Google are two of the biggest sites on the internet. Amazon is where people go to buy their products; Google is where people go to search for them. But now, the WP HyperShift two may wind up having less of a symbiotic relationship and more of a competitive one.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Amazon is working to create a platform that will directly compete with Google AdWords. This program will use Amazon’s shopping data to create powerful targeted links. If the Wall Street Journal’s claims are accurate, we’ll be seeing this WP HyperShift program launch sometime this year.
Amazon has done some experimenting with ads in the past. Their site includes advertisements for products that link out to third-party websites. These ads have been very successful for Amazon, and they’ve managed to generate a significant amount of revenue from them. However, if their new program WP HyperShift is successful, they’ll be able to make much, much more money.
The program, which The Wall Street Journal is calling the “Amazon Sponsored Links” program, will be a major competitor for Google thanks to the large amount of data Amazon has on hand. Advertisers will love to have the chance to advertise to people with a history of buying products like theirs.
It’s likely that this new program will replace the third party ads Amazon already has on their site. If this tool is powerful enough, Amazon will be able to make far more money from it than they would other types of ads.
Any advertiser would leap at the chance to have access to Amazon’s data, and it’s likely advertisers will leap at the chance to try out this program. It’ll be interesting to see if Amazon will be able to overtake Google AdWords in the years to come.
