Adult Acne: Clear and Beautiful Skin in Just Five Steps

Women’s Health Magazine posted an online report on September 22, 2014 containing a five-step plan for treating adult acne. Dr. Simon Ourian of Epione Beverly Hills offers his remarks on the article and proposes his own suggestions for those suffering from adult-onset acne.

Los Angeles, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 09/30/2014 -- Women’s Health Magazine, in a September 22, 2014 article posted on its website titled “5 Essential Steps to Treating Adult Acne,” offers a treatment plan for woman suffering from adult-onset acne. It is important to note that adult acne is distinct from teen acne in that shifting estrogen and progesterone levels make inflammatory cysts and pimples more common.

“It’s important for adult-onset acne patients to understand that the pimple remedies that worked for them in high school may no longer be appropriate or effective,“ says Dr. Ourian, Medical Director of Epione Beverly Hills. “In high school a dab of 10% benzoyl peroxide cream may have been a go-to response to a pimple but for adult skin it is likely too irritating. A cream or product containing 5% benzoyl peroxide will work better”

The Women’s Health Magazine article notes that certain products such as soap, toner, or witch hazel can strip the skin of the natural oils that contain antimicrobial peptides called defensins. The report cites research linking adult-onset acne to high-glycemic index foods and suggests that breakouts might be limited if those foods are eliminated from one’s diet. When over-the-counter remedies fail, the report recommends that women see a physician to discuss their options.

“I know that Women’s Health Magazine isn’t a scientific journal or forum,” says Dr. Ourian, “but, as a rule, I’d prefer that more support is provided for statements like the one linking adult-onset acne to certain foods.”
