Retinoids: Everything One Needs to Know About Retin-A

In an October 2014 article, Allure Magazine reports on the misinformation surrounding retinoid creams. Dr. Simon Ourian of Epione Beverly Hills comments on the article and offers his own primer on retinoids and their use.

Los Angeles, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 10/21/2014 -- In October, 2014, Allure Magazine posted on its website an article titled “The 11 Biggest Retinoid Myths” that seeks to correct the false information surrounding retinoid products. The article first draws the distinction between retinoic acid and retinol. The former is the ingredient that actively combats visible aging and is only available by prescription. Retinol, available in over-the-counter products, first needs to be converted by the skin at the cellular level into retinoic acid before it can be effective. One common myth about retinoids is that they work by exfoliating the skin when in fact redness and peeling are just a side effects. Retinoids actually work at a cellular level by affecting gene expression, smoothing skin, enhancing collagen production, and evening out pigmentation.

“Retinoids are a remarkably effective ingredient and I included them in both our prescription and over-the-counter products,” says Dr. Simon Ourian, Medical Director of Epione Beverly Hills. “As noted in the article, retinoids penetrate the surface of the skin to do their work on a cellular level.”

According to the Allure Magazine article, one of the prevailing myths about retinoids, that it makes the skin more susceptible to damaging UV rays, is based on early clinical studies that have since been debunked. It is also a good idea to start with a product that has a low retinoid concentration to allow the skin to acclimate. Once the skin has adapted, a stronger retinoid can be introduced.

“It is important for patients to know before starting a retinoid regimen that it’ll take an average of 12 weeks to produce results,” says Dr. Ourian. “Skin flare-ups are part of the process but prolonged discomfort should be addressed by one’s physician.”
