InvenSense Introduces Next Evolution of 6-Axis SoC With Enhanced Digital Motion Processor™

InvenSense, Inc. (NYSE:INVN), the leading provider of intelligent sensor system on chip (SoC) for Motion and Sound, announced the introduction of the ICM-20648. The 6-axis ICM-20648 SoC combines InvenSense’s latest enhanced proprietary Digital Motion Processor (DMP) engine with InvenSense’s MotionApps software and algorithms for on-chip activity classification, device context gesture detection, pedometer functionality, run-time calibration, and 6 and 9 axis sensor fusion all running on the DMP. The DMP is a performance and power optimized motion processor; leveraging the DMP and InvenSense’s proprietary algorithms, the ICM garners a 2x - 8x power saving in the processor alone. This results in up to 25% - 50% lower system power than the competition and improved battery life for the end-user; for instance with a 300mAH battery, a device could run a classifier for up to two months and pedometer for up to four months.

The InvenSense ICM-20648’s embedded motion hub solution is designed to offload the complex protocol processing and event filtering necessary to provide on-chip ‘AlwaysOn’ contextual awareness, reducing system cost and complexity, and eliminating the need for additional sensor hub processing ICs. The ICM-20648 SoC has been designed to meet or exceed all new Android Compatibility Test Suite (CTS) sensor requirements for power, performance, and timing accuracy in Android 5.0. The ICM-20648’s integrated hardware and software solution includes a gyroscope, accelerometer and Digital Motion Processor, targeting next-generation smartphones, tablets, fitness devices, watches, and wearables that run Android 5.0 and Android Wear.

InvenSense’s imaging solutions’ industry-leading motion sensitivity is currently benefiting almost every major smart phone manufacturer in the world. With the release of the new ICM-20648, InvenSense is now enabling this industry leading sensitivity performance for classification, context detection and gesture detection. The InvenSense ICM-20648 also exhibits reduced noise and offset performance in both the accelerometer and gyroscope by 30%-50%. Together, InvenSense’s enhancements to sensitivity, noise and offset performance will improve the accuracy of nearly any motion application.

“Included in the new ICM-20648 is InvenSense’s advanced FSYNC solution, which improves image stabilization, measuring true movement of the camera and enables hardware based timing alignment of imaging and motion subsystems to synchronize timing such that motion compensation of the image is more accurate, reducing the software complexity for the OEM, and generating a better imaging experience for the end user,” said Ali Foughi, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at InvenSense. “With no added system cost, the new ICM-20648 enables our customers to create a differentiated imaging experience with a simple plug and play process.”

The InvenSense ICM-20648 solution is available in early Q2 for sampling. InvenSense is exhibiting in booth #D61 in Hall 7 at the 2015 Mobile World Congress taking place in Barcelona, Spain from March 2 - 5, 2015.
