Rate increase likely in December, markets close lower

The markets closed lower with the Dow falling 50 points to 17,867 as the possibility of an interest rate increase in December loomed. Nasdaq slipped 2 points to 5,142.


On the upside

Five9 (Nasdaq: FIVN) narrowed third quarter losses more than expected as revenue rose.


BroadSoft (Nasdaq: BSFT) reported a smaller than expected loss for the third quarter.

On the downside


Foundation Medicine (Nasdaq: FMI) widened losses more than expected even as revenue rose.


Criteo (Nasdaq: CRTO) disappointed with sharply lower third quarter earnings that fell short of expectations.


Third quarter earnings and revenue for Sucampo Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: SCMP) missed estimates.


In the broad market, declining issues outpaced advancers by a margin of 3 to 2 on the NYSE by nearly 10 to 9 on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 lost 7 points to 2,102. Bitcoin surged $41 to $428.
