JPMorgan Chase pays $264 million fine

The markets turned positive during the midday with the Dow gaining 20 points to 18,888. Nasdaq climbed 34 points to 5,329.


JPMorgan Chase will pay a fine of $264 million to settle charges of corruption and bribery. The Securities and Exchange Commission accused the investment bank of hiring friends and relatives of Chinese government officials in order to secure more business deals. The illegal "Sons and Daughters Program" began in 2006 and continued for seven years.


Amazon will offer its Amazon Prime premium subscription service at a $20 discount from its normal cost of $99 per year to $79 for one year. Amazon Prime members get free two-day shipping on all purchases, music streaming from Prime Music, video streaming of television shows and movies through Prime Video, and access to books and magazines through Prime Reading. The special Prime offer is available for only one day on Friday, November 18.


McDonald's customers will soon be able to order and pay for their meals through their smartphones. An app will be available next year in the U.S. and some foreign countries with plans to expand to 25,000 restaurants globally by 2018. A limited version of the app was tested in 22 locations in Columbus, Georgia.


In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of nearly 10 to 9 on the NYSE and by nearly 5 to 3 on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 climbed 9 points to 2,186. Bitcoin gained $5 to $736.
