Noovis, a TRM spinoff: Designing, Installing and Integrating Networks @FiberSpeed

This high-tech startup is already under contract to install next-generation fiber and wireless broadband networks in multiple communities for a prominent, nationwide healthcare services organization.

TRM, a successful systems integrator in the wireless, tower and backhaul market for more than 20 years, today publicly unveiled a spinoff, Noovis LLC, which was formed to provide converged network solutions to government, residential, healthcare, enterprise, higher-education and REIT campuses.

The privately owned company was launched earlier this year and has been operating for several months.

Noovis is pioneering a nationwide transition. Although GPON (gigabit passive optical network) technology has been around for decades, enterprises and new applications are beginning to leverage it, particularly in dense user environments, including campuses, private communities and large buildings, where legacy networks are inadequate for modern data transfer and mobile broadband access requirements.

Over the next decade, every office park, hospital, retirement community and college will replace legacy information pipelines with fiber-based networks that promise to deliver a vastly superior user experience, capacity and capability, predicted Tom Napoli, director of business development for Noovis.

“Countries, regions and cities have been equipped with fiber optics, now the bandwidth chokepoint is in and between local buildings,” said Eric Welty, director of program management for Noovis. “We’re focused on remedying that.”

The new infrastructure will have the capacity to carry an array of data, including internet, telephone, cellular, Wi-Fi, cable TV, video, as well as building systems automation and control, among others.

Green Technology

Because fiber networks eliminate switches, telephone closets and the climate control equipment associated with them, a fiber network can save up to 60 percent of the electricity required to maintain a copper network.

“This is especially appealing to customers who want to save money, desire more sustainable operations, or work toward the various green building certifications,” said Welty.

Early Successes

Noovis is under contract to Erickson Living retirement communities to install state-of-art fiber distributed networks featuring GPON, Wi-Fi and DAS (distributed antenna systems for improved cellular coverage) at three of its campuses. This effort includes deploying the first Cisco enterprise GPON solution in North America, and will include a corporate network, a guest network and triple-play services for 5000+ residents.

“Noovis’s vast GPON experience was instrumental in supporting the first enterprise deployment of our ME4600 GPON-capable platform in North America,” said Charles Tsai, director of product management for Cisco.

“I’m proud of our accomplishments,” said Welty. “We’re ahead of plan and our strong relationships with Erickson Living and Cisco bode well for the continuing growth and expansion of converged technologies and applications.”

Innovation

“Our goal is to lead the industry as the innovative partner of choice for both clients and industry colleagues,” said Welty. “To accelerate and enhance this vision, Noovis is building a first-of-its-kind innovation lab at our Hanover, Maryland, headquarters. It will serve as a collaborative proving ground and testing center for new ideas that will move the converged network, fiber and wireless, platforms forward. Industry partners and potential clients both will be able to access the facility to investigate the expanded video/voice/data capabilities as well as experiment with big data, cloud, cyber and other future bandwidth and speed intensive applications and requirements.”

Noovis intends to position itself as a leader in the federal and state government markets as well. “State, federal and DoD markets are competitive environments. Being a core provider for them requires innovative approaches, an expanded team of skilled engineers, and next-generation solutions in optical networking, wireless access, cyber security, cloud services, application development and passive architectures,” said Welty. “Noovis is already supporting projects nationwide and our forward-looking perspective will soon allow us to provide unparalleled nationwide network monitoring and on-call assistance.”
