The markets closed sharply higher with the Dow leaping 165 points to 17,828 as investors welcomed corporate consolidations. Nasdaq rocketed 73 points to 5,127.


On the upside

Barron's wrote over the weekend that Pfizer (NYSE: PFE) was poised for growth.


Shares of Exxon Mobil (NYSE: XOM) extended its gains.

Bargain hunters lifted shares of Second Sight Medical Products (Nasdaq: EYES).


On the downside


Investors continued to lock in profits on Ellie Mae (NYSE: ELLI).


Accuride (NYSE: ACW) disappointed with lower third quarter earnings that fell short of analyst expectations and forecast full year revenue below estimates.


In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of more than 4 to 1 on the NYSE and by nearly 7 to 2 on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 leaped 24 points to 2,104. Bitcoin jumped $29 to $346.
