As to be expected some areas are more prone to crime than others. In San Antonio, like many other places, the inner-city areas where the population is more dense has a higher rate of crime while the outlying areas, particularly to the North and West, tend to have lower crime rates.
The one serious black spot is the rise in the murder rate which has continued to climb in 2012. Recently released reports show that as of March 1 the number of murders in San Antonio is more than double what it was at the same time last year. When asked about the increasing rate of murders in the city San Antonio Chief of Police William McManus said, "there is a spike and it's early in the year. That doesn't mean that the trend will continue through the year." The chief also added, "It's not being committed by an organized group or groups of people.
