Based on the true story of Northern Africa’s bidding war, ‘CHINA SALESMAN’ follows world telecom companies that fiercely compete to become the country’s first mobile telecommunication technology system. ‘CHINA SALESMAN’ is an action-extravaganza following a Chinese IT engineer, Yan Jian (Dong Xue Li), who is selected to represent his telecom company MTM at the dangerous competition in North Africa against another distinct telecom company, DH. Shortly after the competition commences, Yan Jian discovers that DH’s French spy, Michael, has ulterior, selfish motives to win the competition. For ultimate defeat, Michael hires the best mercenary in Africa, Lauder (Steven Seagal) and former general, Kabbah (Mike Tyson). “Will Yan Jian succeed? Will he be able to restore the communications and stop the new bloody civil war that is about to break out? Can he make China proud? Or will Michael’s plans become reality and the west take over and take everything from the country?” questioned Salvaggio.
Becoming Africa’s first mobile telecom company emphasizes the significant control of power, as those “control the messages sent out to the population. They can pick and choose who has access and to what knowledge,” wrote Salvaggio. But despite the struggle for power, and further, control of communication of “good (Yan Jian) vs. evil (Michael, Lauder, Kabbah)”, ‘CHINA SALESMAN’ allows its audience “to feel how important fixing the communications is to the entire country” and has epic-action that exists to “propel the characters to be and do what they need to do to make the country better. There is death, guns, fights, and explosions but all for a purpose. The fact that they are entertaining just aids in fully immersing the viewer into the action,” continued Salvaggio, adding, “no scene is wasted.”
Worldwide noted for the film’s battle-of-all-battles between Aikido sensation, Steven Seagal and former heavyweight champ, Mike Tyson, their spectacular “hand-to-hand combat is glorious […] fun and over the top amazing”. Highlighting Tyson’s role whose presence “onscreen is powerful”, his intense commitment to Kabbah makes it “is easy to forget the man on screen was once the heavyweight champion and not the driven nationalistic African man he embodies,” gleamed Salvaggio. But, Dong Xue Li is the true star of ‘CHINA SALESMAN’. Despite the corruption he faces during the competition, he is “determined to prove to everyone that he can make amazing things happen” and remains loyal to both his telecom company and Northern Africa and its inhabitants. Salvaggio continued, “Never once does he give up or fall victim to his own frustrations. He is what most aspire to be. Unlike some of the other characters he does not need to transform into something better, because who he already is, is exactly who he needs to be.”
