NuScale Power Announces Launch of NuScale Diverse Energy Platform (NuDEP)

NuScale Power, LLC announced today the launching of its NuScale Diverse Energy Platform (NuDEP) highlighting its small modular reactor technology as the nuclear “plug-n-play” solution for providing reliable power to diverse applications. The announcement was made by Dr. Jose Reyes, Cofounder and Chief Technology Officer of NuScale Power. Dr. Reyes will provide details of this new initiative in a presentation at the IHS CERAWeek 2015 Energy Innovation Pioneer Showcase in Houston, Texas on April 23, 2015.

Several studies recently conducted by NuScale and its application partners have showcased the NuScale Power ModuleTM as the optimized power solution for mission critical applications. Those studies include:

  • Oil Refineries Study - Reduction of Carbon Emissions (NuScale and Fluor)
  • Renewables Study – Integration with Horse Butte Wind Farm (Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems (UAMPS), Energy Northwest, and NuScale)
  • Hydrogen Production Study – High temperature Steam Electrolysis (Idaho National Lab (INL) and NuScale)
  • Desalination Study – Integration with multiple technologies and sized for the Carlsbad, California desalination plant (Aquatech and NuScale)

NuScale is continuing to expand its NuDEP applications. A new study has been launched at INL in partnership with the University of Wyoming on the use of NuDEP for coal conversion to synthetic fuels and other high-value, carbon-based products.

Dr. Jose Reyes stated, “A NuScale multi-module plant provides a unique energy platform suitable for integration with diverse applications because of its very high level of safety and its unique ability to tailor its electric and steam power outputs. We are very excited about the expanded role that a NuScale Diverse Energy Platform can play in meeting clean energy, clean air and clean water goals for our nation. Such a platform could usher in a new era for nuclear power worldwide.”

About NuScale Power, LLC

NuScale Power, LLC is developing a new kind of nuclear plant: a safer, smaller, scalable version of pressurized water reactor technology, designed with natural safety features. Fluor Corporation (NYSE: FLR), a global engineering, procurement and construction company with a 60-year history in commercial nuclear power, is the majority investor in NuScale. As the sole winner of the second round of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) competitively-bid, cost-sharing program to develop nuclear small modular reactor (SMR) technology, NuScale's design offers the benefits of carbon-free nuclear power but takes away the issues presented by the cost of installing large capacity. A nuclear power plant using NuScale's technology is comprised of individual NuScale Power Modules™, each producing 50 megawatts of electricity (gross) with its own factory-built combined containment vessel and reactor vessel, and its own packaged turbine-generator set. A power plant can include as many as 12 NuScale Power Modules to produce as much as 600 MWe, gross (570 net, nominal, after house loads). The reactor coolant is driven by natural circulation and can be shut down safely with no operator action, no AC or DC power, and no external water. NuScale power plants are scalable - additional modules are added as customer demand for electricity increases. NuScale's technology also is ideally suited to supply energy for district heating, desalination and other applications. NuScale is headquartered in Portland, Oregon and has offices in Corvallis, OR; Rockville, MD; Atlanta, GA; Charlotte, NC; and Chattanooga, TN. For more information visit: www.nuscalepower.com.
