"Interventional radiologists have the opportunity to demonstrate the vision to heal by partnering within health systems to provide comprehensive clinical care. Health system administrators, legislators, payers and patients need to know about the significant value and role interventional radiology brings to so many different levels of the health care arena," said Matsumoto. "Advancing the specialty's positive impact on patient care will be a main focus during my term as president," he added.

Matsumoto's clinical practice includes therapies for many conditions including critical limb ischemia, vascular malformations, fibromuscular dysplasia, portal hypertension and genitourinary and biliary diseases; abdominal and thoracic aortic stent grafting for aortic dissections, traumatic injury and aneurysms; stenting for peripheral, renal and mesenteric arterial and central venous disease; IVC filtration, catheter-directed thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy for deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism; and MR-guided focused ultrasound and embolotherapy for uterine fibroids.

Matsumoto is board certified in internal medicine, diagnostic radiology and cardiovascular and interventional radiology and has pioneered many novel, minimally invasive, image-guided procedures during his 24 years at the University of Virginia.

About interventional radiology
Clinicians in the field of interventional radiology pioneered minimally invasive, image-guided treatment, which reaches the source of a medical problem through blood vessels or directly through a tiny incision in the skin to deliver a precise, targeted treatment. Interventional radiology treatments performed by board-certified experts can deliver solutions with less risk, less pain and shorter recovery time than traditional surgery. These treatments are delivered in collaboration with the patient's care team. The specialty was founded in the early 1960s. Today interventional radiology has become synonymous with modern medicine.
