Chicago Magazine Announces 'Best of Chicago' Winners

CHICAGO, July 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Number two just doesn't cut it. In search of Chicago's finest, the editors at Chicago magazine combed the city like no one else for the magazine's annual "Best of Chicago" feature. The result? A diverse lineup chock-full of Chicago's number ones, including play-by-play man Pat Foley, a quirky beer from Three Floyds' Brewing Co., firepower actress Mary Beth Fisher, Macondo's drool-worthy empanadas, and more.

The August issue of Chicago magazine, which hits newsstands Thursday, features 83 top people, places, and things throughout the city and surrounding areas. From the best cupcakes and emerging artists to the best dog trainer and rooftop bar, the magazine highlights who and what makes Chicago stand out to residents and visitors alike.

"Chicago has many star qualities—fantastic improv, luscious food, and stellar boutiques are among them," says Richard Babcock, editor of Chicago. "Every year it gets harder to choose and this year was no exception. I think we came up with a truly spectacular list that's representative of our wonderful city."

This month's issue also features A Friendship in Winter by writer-at-large Bryan Smith. The moving story explores the unique—and unlikely—friendship between Marty Cook, a 34-year-old high-school dropout and recovering alcoholic, and Dan Rostenkowski, the fallen political giant.

Elsewhere in the August issue of Chicago:

  • Sports: As part of the magazine's upcoming anniversary, Chicago names the city's 40 most memorable sports moments. Spanning more than 100 years, this list includes a mix of exhilarating wins and heartbreaking defeats. This is Chicago, after all.
  • Business: Senior editor Marcia Froelke Coburn takes a look at the collective buying website Groupon and its CEO Andrew Mason, examining the company's modest beginnings and ambitious future. Will Groupon become the city's big high-tech breakthrough?

Chicago editor Richard Babcock, managing editor Shane Tritsch, and other members of the magazine staff are available for on-air interviews about stories in the August issue. Contact Kate Mersman at 312-222-3165 to schedule an interview.
