SCORE, – www.score.org - mentors to America’s small businesses, has gathered statistics about the methods and sources that non-profit organizations are currently using to raise funds in this month’s SCORE Infographic, “Non-profits Using Savvy Marketing to Further Their Mission.”

Statistics on Non-profit Organizations

According to data presented visually in the infographic, there are 1.4 million non-profits (tax exempt) in the United States today, 61% of which have annual revenues under $100,000. The infographic offers a complete breakdown of organizations by revenue.

Donation Facts

Donations originate overwhelmingly from individuals; this segment comprises 72% of total donations while 15% come from foundations and 6% are given by corporations. And repeat donations are important: there is a 23% return rate for first-year donors and 58.4% return rate for multi-year donors.

Communication is a Key Marketing Strategy

  • 25% of non-profits have a content marketing strategy
  • 63% send an email within 30 days of signup
  • The average non-profit sends four emails a month to each subscriber

Room for Improvement in Online Fundraising

Online fundraising increased 13.5% in 2013 but mobile marketing is an area where non-profits can improve their presence. While there was a 32% increase in mobile subscriber lists, 84% of donation landing pages are not optimized for mobile viewing.
