Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board Participates in Annual National Night Out Programs Across the State

HARRISBURG, Pa., Aug. 4, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) participated in more than a dozen National Night Out events across the state this year, reaching thousands of young people, parents and community leaders and spreading a message against underage and dangerous drinking. Board Chairman Tim Holden and Members Joseph E. Brion and Mike Negra joined the PLCB's Alcohol Education staff to speak with event attendees and distribute materials about the dangers of underage drinking at an event at the Governor's Residence in Harrisburg Tuesday evening.

Over the past several years, the PLCB has participated in National Night Out events at dozens of locations statewide by distributing materials on PLCB programs, coloring sheets and bookmarks for children and informational brochures about the dangers of alcohol.

National Night Out, "America's Night Out Against Crime," began in 1984 as an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

National Night Out is held annually on the first Tuesday of August. The program has grown considerably since it started 31 years ago, with more than 38 million people in about 16,000 communities in all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian communities and military bases worldwide are expected to participate in 2015.

The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board works to educate the public about the dangers of underage and dangerous drinking through a variety of avenues, including a poster contest for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, a free annual alcohol educational conference, the creation and distribution of a wide range of educational materials and training and technical assistance for organizations working to address the issues of related to irresponsible consumption. The PLCB also provides millions of dollars in alcohol education grants to communities, educational institutions and law enforcement agencies.

In addition, the PLCB regulates the distribution of beverage alcohol and also operates more than 600 wine and spirits stores statewide. Taxes and store profits are returned to Pennsylvania's General Fund. Since its inception, the PLCB has contributed nearly $14 billion to the Pennsylvania Treasury.
