American University Kogod School of Business Welcomes a Diverse Inaugural Online Class to Business@American

WASHINGTON D.C., Oct. 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- American University's Kogod School of Business, today, announced the start of the inaugural class of students in its online business programs known as Business@American. Kogod's online programs include a Master of Business Administration (MBA), and a Master of Science in Analytics (MSAn).

During the past few days, 60 students across the country met each other virtually through live video sessions on Kogod's interactive learning platform. The program allows students, many of whom are working professionals, the opportunity to stay in their local communities while earning a business education from one of the mid-Atlantic's leading academic institutions.

"2015 marked an important year for the Kogod Business School as we celebrated both the school's 60th anniversary and also a new chapter of Kogod innovation by welcoming our first students into our new online programs," said Erran Carmel, Interim Dean Kogod School of Business, American University. "It's especially exciting that these students are not only learning from various communities across the U.S., but represent a diverse group of distinguished professionals."

Kogod's inaugural class of 60 students is comprised of a diverse student body, including 55 percent females and more than 45 percent minorities. In addition to representing 14 states, students hail from a wide range of industries including pharmaceuticals, non-profit, financial services, consulting and information technology.

Here is a class profile of the Kogod School of Business' inaugural online cohort:

  • Age Range: 20 - 53
  • Average Age: 30
  • Average Years Work Experience: 6.5
  • Percent Military: 10%
  • Percent Minority: 48%
  • Percent Female: 55%

According to the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB)'s 2015 Business School Data Guide, females represent a mere 37.7 percent of MBA students.

"Known for excellence in international business with a strong emphasis on service, the MBA@American program at Kogod seemed the best fit for my future pursuits with international aid organizations," said Carmen Westbrook, executive director, Aina Marketplace for Giving and MBA@American student. "My life is extremely full with commitments to my work and family, and being able to cut out three hours of commuting to class while still interacting with my fellow students was an opportunity too good to miss."

The Kogod School of Business also recently announced that starting in January 2016 it would offer a one-year track for MBA@American, making it one of the very few programs from an AACSB-accredited school that can be completed in a year online.

Each year, there are four opportunities to begin the program, with admissions decisions being made on a rolling basis. The next application deadline is November 23, 2015.
