Karen Dunn and Alanna Rutherford of Boies, Schiller & Flexner Named to List of the Nation’s 75 Outstanding Women Lawyers

Boies, Schiller & Flexner partners Karen Dunn and Alanna Rutherford have been honored as “Outstanding Women Lawyers” by the National Law Journal. The publication recognized 75 women lawyers from across the country for, among other things, leadership, performance in significant cases, development of successful practices, and efforts to improve diversity in the profession.

The winners “represent excellence in private practice, corporate counsel work, public interest representation, legal education and the judiciary,” the National Law Journal stated.

Managing Partners David Boies, Jonathan Schiller and Don Flexner congratulated Ms. Dunn and Ms. Rutherford for making this prestigious list, which the National Law Journal has not compiled since 2007.

“Karen and Alanna are brilliant trial lawyers, trusted counsel, and enormous assets to the firm and our clients,” said Chairman David Boies.

Managing Partner Jonathan Schiller added, “The firm is proud to have not one, but two, women partners selected for this distinguished list.”

Ms. Dunn, who is based in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office, served as co-lead counsel in a high-profile antitrust case in the portable music industry, winning a defense verdict from the jury in a class action that had sought $1 billion in damages. She is currently gearing up for another high stakes Silicon Valley trial, representing Oracle. She also represents the District of Columbia Council in its fight to gain autonomy over the city’s local spending. In addition to high stakes litigation, she also provides strategic counseling for companies and individuals in crisis.

Before joining the firm in 2014, Ms. Dunn had served in all three branches of government, experience she brings to bear helping her clients weather crises and respond to government investigations. She served as Associate Counsel to President Barack Obama, as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia, as communications director and senior advisor to Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, and as a law clerk to Judge Merrick B. Garland of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and to Justice Stephen G. Breyer of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Ms. Rutherford, who is based in the firm’s New York City office, has notched many notable victories in high-profile cases while building a broad national practice that focuses on antitrust and complex civil litigation. She played a leading role in one of the nation’s first derivatives litigations and helped secure a $4 billion settlement for a client in an antitrust case. She worked recently on the constitutional takings case brought by AIG shareholders against the U.S. Government in Starr v. United States. She also recently filed two briefs before the U.S. Supreme Court, including one in the McCutcheon v. FEC election law case, which was quoted by the dissent as among the reasons why the majority was wrong.

Ms. Rutherford joined Boies, Schiller & Flexner at the beginning of her career, in 2001, and later became the youngest partner at the firm. Following law school, she clerked for Judge Charles Wilson on the Eleventh Circuit. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and has taught courses in civil procedure and internet regulation at Columbia Law School and University of Connecticut School of Law.
