Special Programs to Aid Faster and Safer Treatment of Women Suffering from Substance Abuse

By: Get News
Most women suffering from substance abuse and related problems also suffer from low self-esteem. They have low value for self-worth and hold a poor opinion about themselves. A successful rehabilitation program should give adequate attention to improving the way the patients view themselves, by incorporating behavioral treatments such as community reinforcement approach, cognitive behavioral therapy, the matrix model, multidimensional family therapy, and incentives reinforcement strategy.Studies have proven that although men are more likely to experience substance related problems, progression of substance abuse and dependence complications are higher and faster in women.

Research has also indicated that the possibility of women getting prescription medicines has doubled compared to that of an average male, and when a prescription for sedating drugs is administered to them, the likelihood of developing dependence is doubled. Women mostly abuse substances to run away from a dreadful past experience such as sexual abuse like rape, and physical abuse and torture. Therefore, any substance dependence treatment center for women should make them feel secure and free from any harm. It should also be tailored to address the specific needs of women patients accordingly.

Procedures providing treatment for substance dependence for women must show great concern for the special needs of women such as weight issues, personal goals of the women, motherhood and child care, and nutritional dysfunctions.

Unlike men, women are less likely to start and finish the substance abuse treatment process. Most of them drop midway due to a variety of reasons that may include; lack of moral support from family members and relatives, motherhood and family care responsibilities that make it difficult for women to undergo full rehabilitation procedure. Fear of losing rights over their children to social systems might also make it impossible for women to fully concentrate on the recovery procedure and more often they opt to abandon treatment than lose custody of their children.

Most women suffering from substance abuse and related problems also suffer from low self-esteem. They have low value for self-worth and hold a poor opinion about themselves. A successful rehabilitation program should give adequate attention to the need of improving the way the patients view themselves. This is achieved by incorporating behavioral treatments such as community reinforcement approach, cognitive behavioral therapy, the matrix model, multidimensional family therapy, and incentives reinforcement strategy. Cognitive behavioral treatment is specifically preferred as it seeks to assist patients in recognizing, avoiding, and or coping with circumstances that may invoke them to abuse drugs, as well as helping to maintain sobriety.

Personal counseling and single gender based groups are used by the centers to address issues related to women only (women based groups).

Peer group therapy is also essential in recovery process. Specialized rehabilitation facilities for treating women addicts facilitate and support peer therapy. This improves bonding and individuals are able to freely interact and share their problems with one another as friends.
