As for why middle aged adults are more susceptible to this, The Atlantic offers this explanation: “It may be that older adults have had more time to develop alcohol dependence, thus putting them at higher risk than college-aged drinkers.” The report also notes that many of these cases involve individuals who do not identify as alcohol-dependent, and who are not technically alcoholics.
