TAPPAHANNOCK, Va. - Aug. 26, 2015 - PRLog -- Local outpatient therapist Ronnie Sidney, II, MSW, will debut his self-published graphic novel Nelson Beats The Odds. The 32-page book is available in soft cover ($14.99) and as an e-book ($9.99) on Amazon.com. Nelson Beats The Odds was illustrated by Imagine That! Design and is published by Creative Medicine: Healing Through Words, LLC.

Sidney, an outpatient therapist at Middle Peninsula- Northern Neck Community Services Board and owner of Creative Medicine: Healing Through Words, LLC, spent third through ninth grade in special education. “My goal was to create a story that would resonate with students diagnosed with learning disabilities and mental health disorders. I want to inspire them to overcome difficult challenges and beat the odds,” explains Sidney.

Nelson Beats The Odds is a contemporary story of Nelson, a fifth grader, whose talking and playing around gets him into hot water with his teachers. When Nelson learns that he’s been placed in special education, he fears being teased so he keeps his learning disability and ADHD diagnosis a secret. With the encouragement of his parents and assistance from Mrs. T., his special education teacher, Nelson learns how to reach his full potential.

Sidney is hosting a book launch party on September 26, 2015 at The Sandbar in Tappahannock, Virginia. Tickets are available for $35 on Eventbrite. For booking presentations, media appearances, interviews, and/or book-signings, contact Ronnie@creative-medicine.com.

Bess Haile, Library Director, Essex Public Library says:

“Nelson Beats The Odds fills a huge gap in literature both for and about children with learning disabilities. Sidney uses clear graphics and heart felt dialogue to demonstrate the struggle so many children with learning disabilities face in school. Nelson has to use every one of his inner resources, including his ninja skills, but with the help of a caring teacher he really does beat the odds.  A welcome addition to libraries, this is just the book to put into the hands of a struggling child.”

Kajsa Jones Pitts, Special Education Teacher says:

“Nelson Beats the Odds is an inspiring book for all youth to read.  The main character, Nelson, tells his personal story of overcoming his fear of being in a special needs class and pushing to reach his goals.  Teachers and parents can also read this book to help them understand how they can also help students overcome their fears of learning."
