Netflix raises fees

The markets advanced during the midday with the Dow soaring 92 points to 22,753. Nasdaq climbed 39 points to 6,574.


Netflix will increase the monthly subscription fees for two of its plans beginning in November. The midrange plan that allows two devices to stream at the same time will increase by $1.00 to $10.99 from $9.99 while the high end plan that allows streaming on four devices will rise by $2.00 to $13.99 per month from $11.99. The new rates will only apply to plans in the United States.


Dunkin' Donuts will slash the variety of donuts that it offers from 40 to between 18 to 24. The company is redirecting resources to its more lucrative and profitable beverage offerings. A new store that recently opened in Pasadena, California has dropped the Donuts from its name and is simply called Dunkin'.


Greece fined several cosmetics companies for anti-trust violations. The anti-trust commission of Greece ruled that L'Oreal, Christian Dior, Estee Lauder and three Greek cosmetics companies agreed on discounts on products and indirectly fixed prices. Christian Dior was fined 1.8 million euros while Estee Lauder was fined 5.4 million euros and L'Oreal was fined 2.6 million euros.


In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of more than 5 to 3 on the NYSE and by more than 3 to 2 on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 gained 12 points to 2,550. Bitcoin soared $117 to $4,331.
