The markets closed lower with the Dow losing 28 points to 21,783 as central bankers met at the annual Jackson Hole economic symposium. Nasdaq slipped 7 points to 6,271.
On the upside
Guess (NYSE: GES) reported second quarter earnings that beat expectations.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will begin covering CareDx's (Nasdaq: CDNA) AlloSure beginning on October 9, 2017.
Abercrombie & Fitch (NYSE: ANF) reported a smaller than expected loss for the second quarter.
On the downside
Shares of Costco (Nasdaq: COST), Kroger (NYSE: KR), Sprouts Farmers Market (Nasdaq: SFM), Supervalu (NYSE: SVU) and Target (NYSE: TGT) all fell after Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) and Whole Foods (Nasdaq: WFM) announced that they will cut the prices on many grocery items such as avocados, bananas and kale beginning on Monday.
Toro (NYSE: TTC) reported higher third quarter earnings and revenue but the stock price fell.
Retreating crude oil prices weighed down shares of Zion Oil & Gas (Nasdaq: ZN).
In the broad market, advancing issues barely edged out decliners by a slim margin on the NYSE while advancers outpaced decliners by a margin of nearly 3 to 2 on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 lost 5 points to 2,438. Bitcoin soared $79 to $4,160.
