Hard to believe that there used to be smoking sections on airplanes. Today, you’d be hard pressed to find any airline that still allows the use of tobacco products. The “no smoking” ban extends to e-cigarettes and vape devices. There are specific rules you must follow if you want to fly with a vape. Vappora goes over the regulations for bringing e-cigarettes and vapes on planes, so you don’t run afoul of the TSA.

Can You Smoke a Vape on a Plane?

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has strict rules regarding the use of tobacco products, cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and vape devices. In general, you can’t smoke “anything” on an airplane, including electronic smoking devices.

You can’t smoke cannabis either, in case you were wondering.

Can You Bring a Vape on a Plane?

Short answer. Yes, but again there are TSA restrictions about flying with a vape. You cannot pack vape devices in your checked bag. You are only allowed to bring them on the plane with you, either in a carry-on bag or on your person. The rule includes battery-powered E-cigarettes, vaporizers, vape pens, atomizers, and electronic nicotine delivery systems. You’ll also need to remove vape devices from your bags when you go through the security checkpoint.

The International Civil Aviation Organization has similar safety rules in place, so international flights apply as well.

NOTE: Each airline has its own regulations and some may be even more restrictive than TSA rules. Be sure to check with your airline before you head to the airport. Vape360has links to many of the major airlines to make it easier for you.

Why Can’t You Pack Vape Devices in Checked Bags?

The main concern with vape devices has to do with the batteries that power them. Lithium batteries have been known to catch fire or explode in midair, and such an incident in the cargo hold could be dangerous.

Note: If you get to the gate and are forced to check your bag because of size restrictions or a lack of room in the overhead bins, be sure to remove your vape device!

If you forget and put a vape device in your checked bag, the TSA will probably confiscate it. You may even face a fine of up to $10,000.

What are the Rules Regarding E-liquids?

The TSA rules regarding liquids, gels, and aerosols (shampoo, hand sanitizer, cream, toothpaste, hair spray, etc.) also apply to e-liquids, including vape juice. Liquids are limited than no more than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. All liquids must also be placed in a clear, quart-sized plastic bag and presented separately at the security checkpoint.

Vappora biggest e-liquid bottle is 100 ml, so you should be okay as far as the size. However, don’t forget to put e-liquid bottles in a clear, plastic bag.
