Rising Investor Sentiment Lifts Markets To Higher Close

Falling oil prices and a declining trade deficit lifted investor sentiment to send the markets up to a higher close with the Dow climbing 78 points to 9864. Nasdaq gained 15 points to 2139.

On the upside

Threshold Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: THLD) reported interim data from a midstage clinical trial of its cancer treatment TH-302.

GenCorp (NYSE: GY) swung to a third quarter profit as sales rose.

NCI Building Systems (NYSE: NCS) announced that it made progress toward completing a refinancing agreement to reduce debt.

On the downside

BankAtlantic Bancorp (NYSE: BBX) announced that it reached an agreement to settle a shareholder derivative action.

Second quarter sales for 99 Cents Only Stores (NYSE: NDN) fell short of estimates.

YRC Worldwide (NYSE: YRCW) announced that it capped its severance plan to twelve weeks of pay and will require nonunion employees to take eight hours off each month.

In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of 7 to 5 on the NYSE and by more than 2 to 1 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks gained 7 points to 614.
