Mixed Close Over Mixed Earnings

The markets closed narrowly mixed amidst mixed earnings and rising oil prices with the Dow falling 14 points to 9871. Nasdaq added a fraction to 2139.

On the upside

Ocean Power Technologies (Nasdaq: OPTT) entered an engineering agreement with Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) to develop wave power systems.

Headwaters (NYSE: HW) announced a $280 million private placement of senior secured notes.

Sinclair Broadcast Group (NYSE: SBGI) said that third quarter revenue will top estimates.

Interactive Intelligence (Nasdaq: ININ) reported preliminary third quarter results that rose to surpass analyst expectations.

Grandunion acquired enough shares of Aries Maritime Transport (Nasdaq: RAMS) to control 71% of the voting shares.

On the downside

Vanda Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: VNDA) licensed the marketing and development rights to its schizophrenia treatment Fanapt to Novartis.

In the broad market, declining issues outpaced advancers by a margin of more than 5 to 4 on the NYSE and by nearly 5 to 4 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks lost 2 points to 611.
