Markets Up Ahead Of Middle Class Aid Announcement

The markets traded higher during the midday with the Dow gaining 60 points to 10,233 as investors await President Barack Obama's middle class aid announcement. Nasdaq rose 9 points to 2214.

On the upside

PrivateBancorp (Nasdaq: PVTB) narrowed fourth quarter losses.

Collins Stewart upgraded Solarfun Power Holdings (Nasdaq: SOLF) to a Buy rating.

Medifast (NYSE: MED) said that fourth quarter as well as full year results will top estimates.

On the downside

While fourth quarter earnings for Bank of Hawaii (NYSE: BOH) beat expectations, Morgan Stanley analyst Ken Zerbe warned that the gains were nonrecurring and due to the sale of investment securities.

Wimm-Bill-Dann (NYSE: WBD) blamed a raw milk shortage for warning that fourth quarter earnings will fall below last year.

Las Vegas Sands (NYSE: LVS) increased the base salary of senior vice president and chief financial officer Kenneth J. Kay retroactive to December 1, 2009 and was granted stock options to purchase 100,000 common shares.

In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of nearly 3 to 2 on the NYSE while advancers barely edged out decliners by a slim margin on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks added a fraction to 618.
