Like many of Cebu’s festivals, the origins of the Tagbo Festival are described by a local legend. The word tagbo actually means to meet, and the Tagbo Festival commemorates the day when two warring tribes met to resolve their differences and decided to build a town together at the meeting place.

However, the legend states that the meeting was actually orchestrated by a giant called Panganuron, who was keen for peace to return to the area. The residents of Poro have enjoyed a long period of peace, and the annual festival marks this fact.
