North Carolina Sportsman Reports World Record Catfish Caught from Kerr Lake
North Carolina Sportsman has reported that a world record catfish was caught in Kerr Lake. Nick Anderson battled the blue catfish for 45 minutes when he landed the 143-pound, 57 inches long blue catfish at Kerr Lake in Virginia. Nick Anderson who is a head football coach at Kinston High School in Greenville, NC was on a father-son trip with his father Rick and brother Jeremmie Mullis. This not only shattered the previous Virginia state record but also the world record for that species.
The blue catfish hit around 8pm close to Goat Island in the middle of the 50,000 acre Kerr Reservoir which is about 3 miles north of the Virginia-North Carolina state lines. Anderson was able to pull the huge catfish on to their pontoon boat using a Shakespeare Ugly Stik rod, a Shimano reel with 30-pound test line. The fish was big enough that most scales couldn’t handle the fish so Anderson took the fish to Mecklenburg Farm Supply which had certified scales. They put the fish on the scales and it came in 143-pounds which shocked everyone that was in attendance.
The fish came in 13 pounds heavier than the current world record and 34 pounds heavier than the Virginia State record. The previous all-tackle world record catfish weighed 130-pounds and was caught last July. The previous Virginia state record was 109-pounds caught out of Kerr Lake.
The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries said the fish appears to meet all qualifications and should be approved as the new state record within a week.
