(PRBuzz.com) April 12, 2012 -- Up to one European transporter in seven may disappear over the next eight years if measures are not taken to improve fleets' energy efficiency, according to a new survey.

Therefore, a Scottish courier firm is sending its drivers back to school to ensure a greener, safer driving fleet. After a recent government announcement introducing a low emissions zone in central London, Eagle Couriers has taken the decision to enrol its drivers on a special green driving course.

Couriers from the firm have undertaken the Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving (SAFED) course. This training course can help reduce fuel, insurance, maintenance costs, reduce occupational road risk and make drivers and vehicles more efficient. The course is backed by the Department of Transport and is recognised by many fleet insurance companies.

Designed to make van and HGV drivers safer on the road, the SAFED course includes the use of driving techniques; better use of gears to avoid over-revving and unnecessary gear changes; keeping correct distances to avoid hard braking; an overall awareness of fuel economy and road layout; and safe and fuel efficient driving techniques.

"This kind of training is very important for any business in our industry. Becoming more fuel efficient is not only good for the environment, but is also beneficial to business bottom line, as we will ultimately be saving more money on fuel. Where possible our drivers use shorter routes and drive at the optimum speed for fuel efficiency, helping us not only reduce our fuel emissions but also ensure that our drivers make deliveries on time," said Jerry Stewart, Director of Eagle Couriers.

With the recent fuel shortage crisis and rising costs of this course couldn't be any more relevant. If companies want to make savings look for specialist insurance brokers and make sure to get the best rate on hgv insurance and commercial van insurance!
