Fuel economy continues to grow in importance for car buyers, and Volkswagen has not only managed to make its redesigned 2014 Golf more efficient, but also more aggressive when it comes to style. Recently revealed at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, the new Volkswagen Golf is 220 pounds lighter than its predecessor after moving to the automaker's new MQB modular architecture, a change that will improve fuel economy by up to 23 percent.

Despite its weight loss, the redesigned 2014 Volkswagen Golf will have a sportier design, featuring a lower, longer and wider body than the current model. While Volkswagen has not yet confirmed the Golf's features for the U.S. market, Edmunds' Inside Line has reported that the hatchback's interior will be more upscale when it arrives stateside in early 2014. Under the hood, the existing 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine is likely to be replaced by a fuel-sipping 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, while the available 2.0-liter diesel powerplant is expected to be updated for the next generation with more power and torque.

"As fuel prices continue to rise, drivers are increasingly looking for a car that offers great gas mileage without skimping on style and performance," said Michael Katsounakis, general manager of Rhode Island Volkswagen dealer Balise Volkswagen. "The redesigned 2014 Golf looks well positioned to do just that, using its lightweight yet strong chassis for an improved ride and its smaller turbocharged engine to deliver efficient power."

Volkswagen also debuted a near-finished concept version of its next-generation Golf GTI at the Paris Motor Show. Though horsepower is expected to get a boost compared to the current model, the 2014 GTI will also make the switch to the MQB platform for a significant weight drop, with Volkswagen claiming fuel-economy savings of 18 percent.

The improved efficiency of the 2014 Golf and Golf GTI is no doubt impressive, but Volkswagen took things further with the reveal of its Golf BlueMotion concept in Paris. Powered by a new 1.6-liter TDI clean-diesel engine, the next generation of the VW Golf BlueMotion will return the equivalent of nearly 74 mpg based on its European-cycle rating, leading the automaker to dub the vehicle its most fuel-efficient Golf ever.

With a predicted range of 971 miles, Volkswagen estimates that if a Golf BlueMotion owner drives about 9,300 miles per year, he or she will only have to fill up the tank about 10 times annually. Like the 2014 Golf and Golf GTI, the new Golf BlueMotion is lighter than its previous model, and it also features improved aerodynamics over the regular Golf, using its lower ride height, a roof spoiler and other measures to earn a drag coefficient of just 0.27. The model is slated for production in Europe next summer, but there are currently no plans to bring it to the United States.

"The Golf BlueMotion shows just how efficient Volkswagen's clean-diesel technology can be, and though we may not see the model on this side of the Atlantic, our customers have plenty of TDI options to choose from here," added Katsounakis. "Buyers of the current Golf TDI already benefit from 42 mpg on the highway and 236 pound-feet of torque, and those numbers should only increase for the next generation."
