(Car Accident Injury Attorney Dallas News) -- We have all heard that texting while driving leads to accidents. Few of us may understand just how serious this problem is. A shocking 500,000 young drivers are hurt each year in accidents caused by distraction. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently teamed up with the Ad Council and the State Attorneys General to launch a new campaign aimed at preventing distracted driving accidents.

You can visit the campaign’s website at http://www.stoptextsstopwrecks.org/#home. As part of the campaign, facts about texting are posted on the website. Here are a few to note:

The average time a person takes her eyes off the road to text is five seconds. When traveling at 55 miles per hour, a driver would cover the length of a football field in five seconds.

A driver who is texting is 23 times more likely to get into a crash than a non-texting driver.

Using a cell phone while driving, whether the phone is handheld or hands-free, delays a driver's reactions as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of .08 percent.

Young people are most affected by texting while driving. Sixteen percent of all drivers younger than 20 involved in fatal crashes were reported to have been distracted while driving.

Sixty percent of drivers use cell phones while driving.

In 2009, 5,474 people in America were killed in traffic accidents and an estimated additional 448,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes that were reported to have involved distracted driving.

These facts are sobering. If distracted driving has impacted your family, you may be entitled to compensation. For more information, contact the Dallas car injury lawyers of 1800 Car Wreck at Eberstein & Witherite, LLP, at 214.378.6665
