The Harley Medical Group is backing a new campaign that aims to ensure patients only visit qualified doctors and nurses when they receive Botox treatments.

Currently, the law states that only doctors or nurses can administer Botox injections to a patient after it has been prescribed to them. Furthermore, the treatment can only be prescribed when the medical professional has met the patient – and not over the phone. However, the injectable is still being offered by clinics up and down the country that do not follow the correct procedures. Botox is a potentially dangerous substance if not used correctly and patients could be putting themselves at risk if they do not receive the proper treatment.

It is thought the number of people opting for Botox injections will increase next year from the 1.5 million patients who have received the treatment so far in 2012. The Harley Medical Group is backing the new campaign to raise awareness of the issue and ensure people are only visiting clinics with qualified doctors and nurses who are following the law.

Hannah Roberts, Senior Nurse Counsellor, said: “The months leading up to Christmas and New Year are a popular time for Botox as people want to reduce lines and wrinkles and look their best for all the parties they attend. It is vitally important that anyone who wants Botox sees a qualified medical professional who follows the regulations, or they could be putting themselves at risk.

“This is a prominent topic at the moment because of the cosmetic surgery review that is currently being undertaken by Sir Bruce Keogh. We support any campaigns that will highlight the issue further and help to ensure no one is at risk when they have Botox.”

All of the Harley Medical Group’s clinics are registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and the highest standards of care are provided to all patients. All cosmetic surgery nurses are fully qualified and employed for their expertise, while plastic surgeons at the Harley Medical Group’s clinics are registered with the General Medical Council or the Irish Medical Council's Specialist Register.

Any patients opting to have Botox will have an initial consultation with a nurse counsellor before their treatment, who will assess their suitability; the treatment will then be carried out by a fully qualified, registered doctor or nurse prescriber.
