Piwik Analytics Seeks Crowdfunding for New Features

By: PRLog
PR Log - Jan 21, 2013 - MONTREAL, Canada -- The start of 2013, is beginning with a fresh look for Piwik.org. Thanks to the team at Clearcode, and feedback from the core team and customers, the Piwik website has been completely redesigned from top to bottom. According to Adrian Speyer, marketing lead at Piwik, "The new design makes it easier for new users to discover more about Piwik and much clearer for users to find what they are looking for." The new design was 6 months in the making, but Piwik is not finished in their redesign project. "We also have plans to revamp the forum in the near future as well. We are quite excited by some of the other surprises we have in store for 2013."

One of the early surprises for 2013, was Piwik launching a crowdfunding initiative. "This is also a big change for Piwik." According to Mr. Speyer, "In the past, Piwik had relied on donations from it's users, but it was never active in soliciting in donations. In 2013, we are not going to be shy in asking for help from our community to keep bringing a great product. These pledges enable us to develop features much quicker than we normally could with currently limited resources. Piwik is and always be free, but the money people donate to Piwik helps investing in a better product. This is actually why we started the crowdfunding initiative". In late December, Piwik started a crowdfunding initiative: the first feature out of the gate, was the flash free SVG maps of Visitors who view your website. The map reports in real time the visits by Country, Cities and Regions. 144 donators from 16 countries donated $4,400. This project made its funding goal with a week to spare! The current feature seeking funding is a Custom Segments editor, suited for data analysts. "We recognize that some users are only comfortable in the Piwik user interface, so in 2013, one of our goals is to make some powerful features accessible from within the interface. In this case, Custom segments or filters were available by creating a special url or via Piwik API. If we reach the funding goal, we will implement a solution that will simple to use yet allowing complicated use cases." explained Mr . Speyer. "Our goal to achieve funding for this is 6,000€ by Feb 14th."

Asked about the reason Piwik started a crowd-funding initiative, Mr. Speyer noted "Piwik market share is a great reward to us. There are more than 464,000 websites using Piwik in 150 countries, and usage is still growing! Piwik is a preferred choice because people want to have control over their data, but they also need a powerful analytics platform. In order to bring them more features they want, faster, we need their financial support to accelerate their requests and needs. We also thought crowdfunding was a great way to democratize all the feature requests. So we select certain wanted features that might just be outside our timeline/budget and can achieve them quicker by getting additional resources. We have a very active and involved community as is shown by their interest and shared passion in supporting us in our crowdfunding efforts."
