Volkswagen Inspires Drivers to ‘Get Happy’ with Ad During the Big Game

Volkswagen's well-received commercial during the big game this past Sunday encouraged viewers to "Get Happy" with a new 2013 Volkswagen Beetle, and it did so by bringing an island feel to an unlikely place: the office. In the spot, an employee named Dave enthusiastically greets his co-workers in a thick Caribbean accent, despite the fact that he is actually from Minnesota. As the ad moves on, the audience discovers that his laid-back, reggae-inspired demeanor comes from time spent in his red VW Beetle, which even convinces his boss to embrace a worry-free philosophy and a similarly amusing accent.

After a 2012-model-year redesign that nodded to the classic look of the 1960s-era Beetle while incorporating a sportier feel, some significant changes have come to the 2013 Beetle, as well. A new 2.0-liter TDI Clean Diesel engine returns up to 41 mpg on the highway, joining two other responsive-yet-efficient powerplants, including a 2.5-liter five-cylinder and a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Meanwhile, a new soft-top Beetle Convertible is now available for open-air fun on the road.

"Volkswagen’s commercial during the big game struck a chord with a lot of people, and though it may not actually make you speak in a Caribbean accent, the Beetle's sleek retro styling and advanced powertrains can give drivers a jolt of unexpected enjoyment during their otherwise mundane commutes," said Michael Katsounakis, general manager of Rhode Island Volkswagen dealer Balise Volkswagen. "Whether it's the ability to put the top down or the realization of how much you're saving on gas, the Beetle can 'turn the frown the other way around,' as Dave says in the ad."

Volkswagen is certainly smiling about its recent sales numbers after posting its best January in the United States since 1974 last month. The automaker’s 6.7 percent sales increase over January 2012 marked its 29th consecutive month of year-over-year growth, with more than 29,000 models sold. Leading the charts once again for the brand was the Volkswagen Jetta, which moved 10,522 units of its sedan and SportWagen models in January.

In addition to offering all of the engines currently available in the 2013 Beetle, the Jetta can also now be purchased with a hybrid drivetrain. New for the 2013 model year, the Jetta Hybrid pairs a 1.4-liter gas engine with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack to reach a combined 170 horsepower and a fuel economy of 48 mpg on the highway.

"With the recent arrival of a hybrid model, the Jetta lineup now has a powertrain for every driving situation, whether you want to be fast and furious in the turns or highly efficient during stop-and-go commuting," added Katsounakis. "No matter what type of engine is under the hood, though, drivers can count on the Jetta to provide unmatched handling and a comfortable ride quality on every trip."
