Bloomberg shills for tech industry

Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced an expansion of his administration's "Made in NY" promotional campaign for film and television to include the city's burgeoning technology sector. The initiative includes a website to help attract new startups to New York, which includes a map of over 3,000 job opportunities. The city will also launch an advertising campaign that highlights tech companies through digital advertisements and ads on subways and buses. "It's fair to say there's simply no better place to build a digital business," Mr. Bloomberg said on Tuesday at a press conference held at BuzzFeed's headquarters in Manhattan. The mayor kicked off the event by spoofing (somewhat clumsily) the viral website's famous " 33 Animals Who Are Extremely Disappointed In You " listicle with one of his own—" 5 Animals That Are Not Disappointed In Mayor Bloomberg ." (The city also sponsored its own listicle on BuzzFeed entitled " 11 Reasons To Start A Company In New York .") The goal is to "pull together resources" for employers and job seekers in the digital sector, as well as expand the administration's effort to promote the city as a destination for tech firms, Mr. Bloomberg said. He unveiled a new website— www.WeAreMadeInNY.com —that pulls together all these resources. A number of companies donated resources to help launch the initiative, including Age and Creativity, BuzzFeed, Clear Channel, LinkedIn, Mashable, Netted, New York Tech Meetup, Reddit, Shutterstock, Songza and Wordpress.com VIP. "This is truly about making it easier to navigate city government and support the tech sector," said Rachel Haot, the city's chief digital officer. Asked whether he had any concerns about the next mayor being as bullish about the tech sector as he has been, Mr. Bloomberg said, "I hope the next mayor will do more than we've ever done."
