With fuel-efficient diesel engines continuing to grow in popularity among U.S. car buyers, BMW will be showcasing a new diesel option for its most popular vehicle at the New York International Auto Show later this month. The BMW 3 Series lineup will be welcoming a new 328d trim for the 2014 model year, complete with a TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder diesel engine that could return more than 40 mpg on the highway.

Producing 280 pound-feet of torque, the 2014 BMW 328d won't be lacking in responsiveness when it goes on sale this summer. According to Automobile magazine, buyers will be able to choose between rear- and all-wheel-drive sedan models, while a diesel Sports Wagon variant equipped with all-wheel drive is expected to go into production at the same time. Gas-powered versions of the next-generation BMW 3 Series Sports Wagon will arrive at dealerships this spring.

"BMW continues to expand its 3 Series lineup to give buyers just the right amounts of what they need, including more miles per gallon and more space for gear," said Marshal Cabot, general manager of BMW of Peabody, a Massachusetts BMW dealer. "Regardless of whether buyers opt for a 328d sedan or a Sports Wagon model, they are still going to get the same signature performance and luxury that are expected from a 3 Series."

The BMW 328d won't be the only new 3 Series launching this summer, as the 2014 BMW 3 Series Grand Turismo will also be available in time for trips to the beach. Like the Sports Wagon, the 3 Series Grand Turismo will feature a luggage-friendly tailgate, but it will be larger overall, adding 2.8 inches of rear legroom and an additional cubic foot of cargo space. Buyers will be able to select from two gas engines, including a TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder and an inline six-cylinder.

Aside from the U.S. debuts of the BMW 328d and 3 Series Grand Turismo in New York City, BMW will be giving show attendees a glimpse of how it plans to provide even more fuel efficiency and versatility in the future with its Concept Active Tourer. The plug-in hybrid hatchback pairs a sleek design with a three-cylinder gas engine and electric motor that BMW claims can net nearly 95 mpg. Leveraging new Suspended Particle Device technology, the BMW Concept Active Tourer also sports a Cool Shade composite glass roof that can turn completely translucent or become darkened at the touch of a button.

"The younger generation of luxury buyers want more than just horsepower or amenities, they want a car that is smart and sustainable, and the Concept Active Tourer appeals directly to that demographic," added Cabot. "BMW recognizes that drivers are trending toward smaller, more efficient vehicles, and it is developing a wide variety of options to meet that demand, whether it's a diesel version of the proven 3 Series or a completely new plug-in hybrid."
