Following its debut for the 2010 model year, the fifth-generation Chevy Camaro has been the most popular sports car in America for three straight years. Even the most popular models need updates to stay current, though, and the Camaro is due to receive a refresh for the 2014 model year. Few details have been released about the 2014 Chevy Camaro SS ahead of its debut at the New York International Auto Show later this week; however, a new teaser photo shows that the muscle car's existing two-level grille has been replaced by a narrower one-row grille.

The new Camaro SS will be joined in New York by two other performance models from the bowtie brand: the redesigned 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray and the all-new 2014 Chevy SS sports sedan. Featuring a lightweight aluminum frame and a 6.2-liter V8 engine estimated to churn out 450 horsepower, the 2014 Corvette Stingray will be the most powerful standard Corvette ever, yet it is expected to boast better fuel economy than its predecessor. When it goes on sale toward the end of 2013, the latest iteration of Chevy's iconic sports car will be available in coupe and convertible forms, with the convertible donning a new fully electronic top that can be lowered remotely with a key fob.

"Fans of Chevy's performance cars have a lot to look forward to in the coming year, and the driving enthusiasts attending the show in New York are going to have a lot to take in," said Chris Harper, general manager of Oxford, Maine Chevy dealership Goodwin Chevrolet Oxford. "With the success of its more fuel-efficient lineup in recent years, Chevy has been able to invest even more into its sportier rides, so a wide variety of drivers are benefiting."

One of the fruits of Chevy's labor is the brand's first rear-wheel-drive sedan in 17 years, the 2014 Chevy SS. Unveiled at the Daytona International Speedway in February, the NASCAR-influenced Chevy SS houses a 6.2-liter V8 that produces 415 horsepower, as well as enough room for five passengers. Even with that extra space, Chevy's new performance model has a near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution and a sport-tuned suspension for impressive handling.

Unlike its race-ready NASCAR variant, the Chevy SS is designed for luxury and convenience on the inside. Hand-wrapped, leather-appointed seats and a premium nine-speaker Bose sound system create an upscale cabin, while the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system offers hands-free calling, compatibility with smartphone apps like Pandora Internet radio and available navigation.

"When it arrives late this year, the Chevy SS will be perfect for former Camaro or Corvette owners who now have growing families and need more space," Harper noted. "Performance-hungry parents will get all the acceleration and handling they desire for the back roads on weekends, but they'll be able to get their kids to and from school in comfort during the week."
