Las Vegas DUI Arrests are up Following Aggressive Roadside Sobriety Checks by Police

By: PRLog
Visitors and residents of Las Vegas need to be aware that police have increased their efforts to curb DUI related crimes by instituting more DUI checkpoints. This affects anyone who makes the choice to drink and drive in Las Vegas. The Potter Criminal defense team encourages anyone who drinks to choose a taxi over driving to keep everyone safe and without having to face harsh Nevada DUI laws.

PR Log - Apr 17, 2013 - Las Vegas has seen a dramatic increase in the number of DUI arrests as of late. This could be due in part to an increased number of roadside sobriety checkpoints being manned by police.

In March, police began operating sobriety checkpoints near the University of Las Vegas at Nevada in an attempt to curb underage drinking and driving. This particular area of town was targeted because it had traditionally been the location of several drunk driving related accidents. The opening of the sobriety checkpoints was targeted to coincide with spring break at the college campus.

A number of arrests were conducted because of operating these checkpoints. Funding for them was underwritten by two local grants from the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety. Although these checkpoints are no longer operational, they could nonetheless reappear later should the funding to operate them become available.

The decision to crack down on drinking and driving was made after there was a dramatic increase in the number of DUI arrests in 2012. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police department reported earlier this year that drinking and driving arrests were up 18% last year over 2011. That amounted to approximately 30 arrests every day. The number of arrests tended to increase around major holidays such as Memorial Day and the Fourth of July.

Las Vegas has long been a city with more than its share of DUI arrests. That could be due to the party-like atmosphere of this town coupled with the fact that alcohol is served 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In addition, there are no dram shop laws that hold businesses responsible for serving too much alcohol to patrons that later injure others in a drunk driving accident.

Since the number of alcohol-related fatalities has also increased in recent months, it is likely that the number of DUI checkpoints in Las Vegas will also increase. Those who have been arrested for a DUI can contact a law firm such as Potter Criminal Defense.
