New York City, New York -- (May 21, 2013)
The biotechnology industry is facing significant challenges due to increasing competition from generic drug makers. With patents on several blockbuster drugs set to expire over the next few years, the competition from generic drug makers is expected to rise further. Another challenge for biotechnology companies is operating in emerging markets. While healthcare spending in many emerging markets is rising, most of these countries do not have proper laws to protect intellectual property rights. Biotech stocks ended mostly lower on Monday as the broad market struggled. Among the major movers were Celgene Corporation (NASDAQ: CELG), Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: ARNA), Incyte Corporation (NASDAQ: INCY), Spectrum Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: SPPI), and Geron Corporation (NASDAQ: GERN).
