Photo Release -- Special Needs Assistance Program Grant Provides a New Roof and Siding Repairs for Elderly Homeowner

NATCHEZ, Miss., May 31, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Dorothy Sanders, 69, cares for her mother, who will turn 97 in June, in a 1950s-era home built by her father when she was in elementary school.

Ms. Sanders later got married and moved away, but eventually found her way back in 1992 to her childhood home and its many memories.

A $4,695 Special Needs Assistance Program (SNAP) grant from Concordia Bank & Trust and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas (FHLB Dallas) helped Ms. Sanders replace the home's roof and repair some of its siding. Work was completed in early March 2013.

"This came up as something that could help us out," Ms. Sanders said of the SNAP grant. "It's a good program. It's really needed here in Natchez with so many people on a fixed income." To be able to get the work done was "a relief for me," she added.

James Johnston, city of Natchez community development director, said the city got involved in SNAP in 2012 and looked for eligible homeowners in its community that needed help with home repairs. Mr. Johnston worked through several aldermen on the Natchez Board of Aldermen to find worthy recipients. The city especially sought to help out its elderly residents, he said.

Natchez Mayor Larry L. "Butch" Brown said the SNAP grant has been especially critical in the years following the nation's financial crisis as the economy has struggled -- leaving more people unemployed and cash-strapped.

"We are so glad to be able to help Ms. Sanders and other homeowners make needed repairs to their homes," Mayor Brown said. "The SNAP program has provided an added economic boost during a time of need."

Glynn Laird, senior vice president at Concordia Bank & Trust, said SNAP provides an avenue for the bank to take an active role in giving back to the city of Natchez.

"We are so pleased to be able to assist Ms. Sanders and other SNAP recipients in making their homes safer and more enjoyable for years to come," he said. "It's just one way we've been able to give back to a city that we call home."

FHLB Dallas has awarded $46,845 through Concordia Bank & Trust to assist 10 homeowners, so far in 2013.

SNAP grants are available through FHLB Dallas member institutions, such as Concordia Bank & Trust, on a first-come, first-served basis to assist income-qualified, special needs homeowners with emergency home repairs and modifications. The program was established in 2009 and, through its member institutions, FHLB Dallas has provided more than $6 million in SNAP grants to 1,260 eligible homeowners.
