BD-PRo Marketing Solutions’ intern, Sara Geisler, creates an interactive Facebook caption contest based on networking faux pas. The contest allows fans to share real-life, annoying networking experiences and also learn from other fellow networkers so they don’t repeat common networking mistakes. The goal of the contest is to engage with others, while providing networking tips on what not to do while networking.

Business networking is only productive if you are able to build your database of connections with mutually beneficial relationships, not just increasing social media contacts and handing out business cards. You can lose an opportunity to build a strong business relationship by inadvertently committing various networking faux pas.  BD-PRo Marketing developed a Facebook contest to engage with their followers about common networking problems, and provide a fun and interactive way for everyone to learn about networking pet peeves, so they do not make the same mistakes.  

The caption contest launched on June 11th 2013 and showed a photograph of an obviously annoyed networker. Participants were then given the chance to draw upon their own experiences to write a caption sharing an irritating networking situation that could have caused this reaction.  “You can read tons of articles and books about networking, but I think most people learn best from their experiences,” Geisler states.  “The leading caption states ‘Would it be rude to throw a breath mint in while he keeps talking?’ which clearly demonstrates a problem that exists in networking situations. We hear about things like be a good listener and don’t interrupt, but bad breath? This isn’t something that is commonly covered in articles about successful networking. This contest combines humor with sharing and it is exciting to interact with our community in a fun way.”
