Grass Seed USA Announces Official Partnership With National Play Outside Day
Partnership Launches August 3; City of Portland Issues Official Proclamation
SALEM, OR -- (Marketwired) -- 08/02/13 -- Grass Seed USA, a coalition of American grass seed farmers and turf specialists, has officially partnered with National Play Outside Day to encourage all Americans to dedicate at least the first Saturday of every month to engage in outdoor activities. The partnership launches Saturday, August 3, with an official proclamation from the City of Portland commemorating the day.
"Playing outside in your lawn or at a nearby park is a great way to stay fit and to enjoy quality time with friends and family," said Bryan Ostlund, executive director of Grass Seed USA. "We are glad to support the mission of National Play Outside Day to encourage people of all ages to enjoy the outdoors."
In celebration of the Grass Seed USA's partnership with National Play Outside Day, Grass Seed USA offers a fun list of activities that are sure to get you outside this Saturday:
Soccer - Considered to be the world's most popular sport, soccer (football) is a great way for people to get outside and get the blood flowing. Whether you have 22 players for a full game of soccer, or just want to kick a ball around with a friend or two out on a grass field, soccer is a classic outdoor activity that will never go out of style.
Frisbee/Frisbee Golf - Frisbees come in all different shapes and sizes -- some are meant to be used for long-distance throwing, while others are small, weighted and designed for accuracy. Frisbee is fun to play in big or small groups, and many public parks around the country even have permanent frisbee golf courses set up for those frisbee-ers who want to take it a step further.
Slacklining - You may have seen park-goers practicing this before, but slacklining is the act of balancing on a tightened rope that's been fastened between two anchor points (these are often times trees). Slacklines can be purchased at most athletic stores and are a fun way to increase one's balance and leg strength. Be sure you have a soft spot to land on!
Yoga - Dating back more than four thousand years, yoga is one of the oldest and most practiced forms of exercise, and has been shown to reduce stress, increase mental awareness and reduce some forms of chronic pain. Yoga's great for people of all ages, and the best part is that you don't need any supplies or gear to get started -- find yourself a grassy spot and try out your Upward Facing Dog.
Lawn bowling - The objective of lawn bowling is to roll balls -- which are often times weighted -- down a grassy pathway, as close as possible to a smaller ball, called the "jack." As a member of the boules family of sports, lawn bowling shares a common ancestry with bocce, pétanque and other games in which a heavy ball is thrown or rolled toward a smaller target ball.
