Mediation is an informal way for two or more parties to resolve conflict with the aid of a neutral third-party mediator. In divorce matters, it is a less costly and less stressful alternative to traditional court litigation. Most people who are familiar with the process know what mediation is. Matthew Brickman explained in a recent video series what mediation is not and should not be.

In a recent video posted to his YouTube channel he opened with the following statement, "Hi, my name is Matthew Brickman. I am a county, civil, family and appellate mediator and president of iMediate, Inc. I’ve done a few videos where I’ve spoken about what mediation is and what the role of the mediator is, but what we haven’t discussed is what mediation should not be."
He went on to say "I’ve conducted mediations and afterwards, the parties have said, 'Wow, we’ve had mediations before, and it was nothing like that. Mediation should not be a place where it’s a free for all, where the parties get to insult each other, make wild, crazy, unfounded accusations, or where one party gets to intimidate or coerce the other party into some sort of agreement. Odds are that’s probably what took place during the relationship, and that’s why there’s going to be a mediation with me, anyway."
He concluded the video by saying "What I won’t do is I won’t allow any of that. That is not what mediation is. Mediation should be a safe place for you to be able to conduct the issues at hand so that you can peacefully move on with your life."

One study found that when the wife alone had experienced a parental divorce, her odds of divorce increased to 59 percent.
