PRLog - Feb. 26, 2014 - HONOLULU -- John Henry Felix, Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Hawaii Medical Assurance Association (HMAA), will be presented with the Menlo College President’s Medal this month in honor of his outstanding business achievements and support for the College and the community.  Felix, Menlo College Class of 1949, is the first person from Hawaii in the history of the 87-year-old institution to receive this high honor.  Felix has also served on Menlo's Board of Trustees for nine years, and lectured at the College.  The very prestigious President’s Medal will be bestowed upon Felix by Menlo College’s president,

Dr. James J. Kelly, on February 26, 2014, at the Pacific Club in Honolulu.

“Menlo College has an outstanding group of successful alumni, many of whom are distinguished business leaders, but few have worked as diligently and thoughtfully to support our College, its student recruitment, alumni connections, and faculty development as has Dr. John Henry Felix,” said Kelly.  “In looking over Dr. Felix's achievements, it is somewhat overwhelming to learn the profound impact he has made in business, government, labor-management relations, community service, diplomacy and education.”

Despite the humblest of beginnings, Felix has achieved tremendous business success, and continues his lifelong mission to promote education and share his success with the community.  Because of this, Felix has been honored with numerous awards in his 83 years (a summarized biography from a recent award is attached), among them being the very first recipient of three awards:  The March of Dimes National Lifetime Achievement Award; the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Award (March of Dimes); and the Distinguished Service Award (Salk Institute for Biological Studies).  He was also the first American to receive the Henry Dunant Medal of the International Red Cross, which honors outstanding humanitarian service during armed conflicts.  He was honored by President Ronald Reagan after receiving the Dunant Medal.  Felix is also the only person ever to have received both the Dunant Medal and the highest honor of the American Red Cross, the Harriman Award.

In addition, on January 27,2014, Dr. Ralph Waller, Principal at Harris Manchester College and Pro Vice Chancellor, University of Oxford, announced that the Harris Manchester College will be naming their new dining hall after Felix.  He received two MAs (Master of Arts) from Oxford, and was also appointed to the business faculty there and served until he reached the mandatory retirement age of 75.  Felix continues to chair the Board of Regents at Harris Manchester College, a position he has held for over twenty years, is a member of “Convocation,” the Governing Body of the University, an unpaid Vice President for Development, a member of Oxford's Supreme Governing Board, "Congregation," and has been elected for life to the "Chancellor's Court" of the University.  Under Felix’s guidance, the College is academically and financially ranked among the top tier within Oxford.

“My colleagues and I are delighted that Dr. Felix is being honored in this way by our friends at Menlo College,” said Waller.  “Dr. Felix has given selfless service to both the College and the University, and has been recognized for his contribution by being appointed to the Chancellor’s Court of the University for his lifetime.  It is the intention of Harris Manchester College to name in perpetuity our new dining hall after Dr. Felix.”

Felix has nurtured a close friendship between Menlo College and Harris Manchester College.

“Our two institutions continue to flourish as we salute one who has done much to promote friendship between Harris Manchester College and Menlo College, between the United Kingdom and the United States of America,” added Waller.

The long list of tributes to Felix does not diminish the extreme pride and humility he feels in receiving the Menlo College President’s Medal this year.

“I'm deeply humbled and honored to be recognized by my first college with this prestigious award.  Attending Menlo College provided me with a wonderful business education that helped to shape who I am today, and being a member of its Board of Directors and a faculty member over the years has been a tremendous privilege,” said Felix. “I'm also most grateful to my parents for encouraging me to pursue a lifetime of commitment to education and community.”

The event honoring Felix on February 26th will be attended by government officials, business and community leaders, associates, and friends.
